How does pep work?

Pep, a colloquial term for amphetamine, has a strong stimulating effect on the central nervous system. After consumption, the effect usually sets in within 30 minutes and can last for several hours.

The typical effects of pep are

  • Euphoria and increased motivation: consumers feel energised and have the feeling that they can achieve more.
  • Suppression of tiredness: Pep inhibits the need for sleep and can keep you awake for hours.
  • Increased concentration and performance: Many report increased alertness and improved concentration, which is why the substance is also used as a "work drug".

However, there are also unpleasant side effects:

  • Heart palpitations and high blood pressure
  • Nervousness and restlessness
  • Loss of appetite

In the long term, consumption can cause psychological and physical damage, such as addiction or cardiovascular disease.

The difference between:

Coke and Pep

Cocaine (coke) and pep (amphetamine) are both stimulants, but they differ in their origin, effect and method of consumption. Cocaine is extracted from the coca plant and has a short-term, intense effect that increases euphoria and self-confidence. Pep, on the other hand, is a synthetically produced drug with a longer-lasting effect and a stronger focus on alertness and physical energy.

Another difference lies in the method of consumption: cocaine is usually snorted, while pep is consumed both snorted and in tablet form. The risks are high for both substances, but cocaine is considered potentially more expensive and often associated with a stronger addictive potential.

The difference between:

Speed and Pep

Speed and pep are often used interchangeably, but are not exactly the same thing. Both terms refer to amphetamine-based substances, but there are subtle differences.

Speed is a collective term for mixtures that often contain amphetamine or methamphetamine, often diluted with caffeine, sugar or other substances to increase the mass. Pep, on the other hand, is usually used specifically for amphetamine and is considered a "purer" variant in the drug scene.

They are similar in effect, as both have a strong stimulating effect, increase alertness and suppress the feeling of tiredness. Nevertheless, the intensity depends on purity and dosage. While speed is often more widely available, pep is considered to be higher-dose and therefore riskier.

How is Pep dosed?

The dosage of pep (amphetamine) varies greatly and depends on the purity, the form of consumption and the tolerance of the user. In the drug scene, pep is often snorted as a powder or, in rare cases, taken orally. A typical single dose is around 20 to 50 milligrams of pure amphetamine, although it is common to mix it with other substances, which makes the actual dosage difficult to estimate.

Usual dosages and their effects:

  • Low dosage (10-20 mg): mildly stimulates, promotes alertness and mild euphoria.
  • Medium dosage (20-50 mg): Increased concentration, euphoria, greatly reduced tiredness.
  • High dosage (>50 mg): Intense palpitations, restlessness, high risk of unpleasant side effects such as tremors, paranoia or anxiety.

There is no safe dose as the effects vary depending on purity and individual sensitivity. An overdose can have serious consequences such as circulatory problems or psychotic states.

Risks and side effects of Pep (amphetamine)

The consumption of pep (amphetamine) harbours considerable dangers, which can occur both in the short and long term:

  • Short-term risks: palpitations, insomnia, loss of appetite, increased aggression
  • Long-term consequences: addiction, mental illnesses such as depression, damage to the cardiovascular system

In addition, the combination with other substances, such as alcohol or cocaine, can intensify the side effects and lead to life-threatening conditions. This is precisely why it is essential to use such substances consciously or to abstain from them altogether.
